Veterinary Surgeons Act of 1966

In the UK, in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act of 1966, to treat any animal other than your own without veterinary consent is illegal. Approval and permission must normally be obtained from a vet before any treatment is given. In the UK diagnosis and treatment of other people’s animals in a wide range of situations is considered to be ‘an act of veterinary surgery’ and can therefore only be carried out by a vet.

The Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order 1962 allows for the treatment of animals by physiotherapy*, provided that the animal has first been seen by a veterinary surgeon who has diagnosed the condition and decided that it should be treated by physiotherapy under his/her direction.

*Definition of Physiotherapy is interpreted as including all kinds of manipulative therapy.

I acknowledge and respect the above acts and require prior veterinary consent before providing canine massage to your dog. I recognise the limits of my professional competence and training and will always refer back to the Veterinary Surgeon if and when necessary.
